They are examples of how civil engineering can be seen as an engineering field from which human social activities began and by which they have advanced. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering takes up academic fields that create the infrastructure for abundant and culturally rich social living. The scope encompassed by civil and environmental engineering is broad and diverse. Included are the design of public social infrastructure such as roads, railways, maritime ports, airports, and water and sewage systems; the creation of waterside spaces coexisting with nature; the building of cities resistant to floods, tsunami and other disasters; and the planning of livable, efficient and economical urban centers. To meet diversifying and new needs, the Department carries out daily research contributing to the advance of society.
