Herrigel, who taught at Tohoku Imperial University from the end of Taisho to the first year of Showa, was trained under Master Kenzo Awa in the art of Kyudo (Japanese archery). This section considers that human beings should be comprehensively studied and educated from the perspective of humanities and exercise physiology with a focus on historical science, if such unification between intelligence and senses and between sensibility and exercise created the world, the past, the future, and other aspects.   As Ogyu Sorai said, “the ultimate form of scholarly knowledge is history” (“Tomonsho”), the history of the humanities is very important as a foundation or coordinator for various disciplines. This section handles from a demonstrative approach not just literature but the molding of such, bringing economics and business administration into perspective, targeting not just the archipelago of Japan but also the continents around the world, like sailing a great distance across the sea and riding a train to visit a far country, while still grounded in Japan and Tohoku University. It also places importance on the classics that are the source of future developments along with early modernity and the modernity that we face today.   On the other hand, world recognition through physical physiology and exercise, and the understanding of and cooperation with other people are what we know as sports and martial arts. Passing down “health maintenance, health promotion, and the provision of knowledge,” “improvement in communication skills,” and “the spirit of martial arts” to students through practice in classes is the responsibility of this section. At the same time, this section aims to provide universal education in order to maintain the basics of life (health, communication, etc.) and produce human resources that will continue to be active in the world, and in consideration of this world, for a long time. The recent stresses in our society means the maintenance of not only physical health but also mental health is an important issue after graduation as well as in university. The Section of Sport Science Education conducts research with a focus on the relationship between maintenance and promotion of physical health and health of “mind.” This research attempts to verify the meaning of continuing to exercise even a little every day, as much as possible.
