Roadside rest area near JR Biei Station. Michi no Eki Biei (Roadside Station Biei) is a 3-minute walk from JR Biei Station. This warehouse was one of three built in 1917 by Biei Soko Co. using Biei soft stone as material, and has been used mainly as a storage warehouse for beans (red beans, soya, etc.). Mining of this stone began in 1916 in the Murayama area of the town (north of Route 237) and continued until around 1969, when it was widely used as a building and civil engineering material. The stone was formed by pyroclastic flow deposits from old eruptions and is called rhyolitic ashlar, with quartz visible to the naked eye. It was widely used in Hokkaido and is still in use at JR Biei Station (built in 1952) and The Sun Kuranin (a confectionary shop in Asahikawa). The last building of this facility was reborn in April 2006 as a facility with a cafeteria selling local products and using Biei-cho ingredients. And, on 1 March 2007, it became the Roadside Station Biei "Oka(Hill)-no-Kura". In this building, there is a restaurant serving the new local gourmet "Biei Kare Udon" (udon noodles), attractive souvenirs, such as woodwork and ceramics from ateliers in the town, are sold only here.
