The lecture is entitled: "Imitation, Deification, and Identity: Heian Jingu's Many Facades." Inaugurated in 1895, Heian Jingu paid testament to Kyoto's ancient history, its role as the nation's capital for over 1,000 years, and the city's founder - Emperor Kanmu. In this lecture, Professor Van Goethem will explore the complex narrative behind Heian Jingu's foundation, dealing with the fluid nature of Emperor Kanmu's image. Ultimately, the lecture traverses Heian Jingu's process of historical, social, and ideological transformation in what is sure to be an interesting discussion. The lecture will be conducted in English and there is no registration necessary. The event is also free of charge. @About the Speaker Ellen Van Goethem holds a Ph.D. in Oriental Languages and Cultures from Ghent University. After having taught at Ghent University and Hosei University, she joined Kyushu University in 2011 to help establish the IMAP in Japanese Humanities. She is the co-founder of the Journal of Asian Humanities at Kyushu University (JAH-Q). Van Goethem specializes in the history and archaeology of the Asuka, Nara, and early Heian periods. Her current research an institutional and social history of Heian Jingu.
